many tests failing on Travis after some kind of Travis upgrade

Nearly every test is failing for 32-bit, and a bunch are timing out on 64-bit. For 32-bit we'll have to run with -VV to try and see what's going on but from those tests that do happen to print their output it looks like it's all blank so this will not be easy to figure out unless we can repro locally.
