test failures on win8 bot: win32.multisec, win32.rebased, client.nudge_ex

I took some time and fixed or worked around several win8-specific issues ( issue #1427 (closed) , issue #934 (closed) , issue #962 , issue #1431 (closed) , issue #1035 (closed) ) and now the tests all pass on my win8 VM.
